Summary on the Doctrine of the Holy Spirit

  • Holy Spirit is Someone and not something.
  • Holy Spirit is a Person—has intellect, emotion and will. He talks to us (Acts 13:2; 16:6; Rev. 2:7). He can be grieved (Eph. 4:30; Heb. 10:29)
  • Holy Spirit is God. His name is interchangeable with God (Acts 5:3–4; Luke 1:35). He knows everything (1 Cor. 2:10–11) and does only what God can do (Gen. 1:2; Ps. 104:30).
  • He is a member of the Trinity. He is distinct from the Father and Son (Rom. 1:4; Matt. 28:19). He is not another name for God. He talks to the father (Rom. 8:26), and is sent from the Father and Son (John 14:16, 26; 16:7). He inspired Scripture (2 Tim. 3:16).
  • Transformation only happens through the ministry of the Holy Spirit (John 16:8–11). Helps us speak in difficult situations to bear witness (Mark 11:13; Luke 12:12).
  • As Paraclete he gives us strength (John 14–16; Acts 9:31; 13:2; 15:28; 1 Cor. 2:9–10; 1 John 5:6–8).
  • Holy Spirit gives us power to witness, draws people to God through conviction of sins, and believers closer to Jesus (Acts 1:8; John 16:7–11; 1 Thess. 1:5; Rom. 8:26; Eph. 3:16–19).
  • By his power, we abound in hope (Rom. 15:13).
  • By his power, we exercise spiritual gifts (1 Cor. 12:7).
  • By his power, he has made our hearts his home (1 Cor. 3:16).

Scripture and Spirit are needed if we want to be a biblically balanced Christian. We need to be grounded in Scripture and guided by the Holy Spirit.

In Old Testament, the Holy Spirit came upon selected individuals. Power in action is in fact the basic biblical thought whenever God’s Spirit is mentioned in the Old Testament. But in the New Testament and today, every one receives the Holy Spirit upon conversion.

While there is one baptism in/of the Spirit, there can be many fillings.

When someone is filled with the Holy Spirit, it will be expressed in action. Every believer is indwelt by the Holy Spirit but not everyone is empowered by the Holy Spirit. Hence the need and necessity to be filled again and again. Fresh fillings are needed for victorious living and vibrant ministry.

Holy Spirit is involved in salvation, sanctification, supplication and service. Spiritual gifts have been given to us to be used to build up the body and not for personal aggrandizement.  He is the key to effective Christian living and ministry. He is a necessity for the church and not a luxury. No Spirit, no Power. No unction in the pulpit, no action in the pews.

To be filled with the Holy Spirit means to be controlled by him. It is not how much we have of the Holy Spirit but how much He has of us. In the end, we need to be God-centered, Christ-oriented, and Spirit-guided christians.

Like the woman at the well I was seeking
For things that could not satisfy;
And then I heard my Savior speaking:
“Draw from my well that never shall run dry.”

Fill my cup Lord, I lift it up, Lord!
Come and quench this thirsting of my soul;
Bread of heaven, Feed me till I want no more—
Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole!

Dear friends, it’s my prayer that this will be your daily prayer, “Fill my cup, Lord, I lift it up, Lord.”

Conclusion

Congratulations for staying with Global Reachout. I hope that you have enjoyed listening and reading the text as much as I have enjoyed preparing it. Consequently, you have been encouraged personally and enriched spiritually.  Let me make 2 very important statements.

One, knowing Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour is the greatest thing in your life. If you do not know Jesus Christ personally, would you please pray with me:

Dear God,

I believe in you.

Thank You for sending your son Jesus Christ to die on the cross for my sins.

I admit I am a sinner.

I open the door of my life and receive Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord.

Thank You God for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life.

From today onwards, take control of my life.

Help me live a meaningful and fulfilled life.  Amen.

Two, Remember, you are a person of worth, value and dignity. Why? Let me give you 3 compelling reasons:

  1. You are created in the image of God (Gen 1:26)
  2. You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14)
  3. God Loves you, Jesus died for you and the Holy Spirit lives in you.

Praise the Lord. As we conclude our series on the Holy Spirit, allow me to say thank you to the Chairman of Global Reachout for inviting me to share on this vital and pivotal subject - The Holy Spirit. To all of you who have tuned in to listen. It has been an enriching and rewarding experience for me.

The good news is that what I have shared with you is this, all that have broadcasted in this program can be found in a book entitled, “Empowering Spirit and Christian Living.” If you would like to have a copy, please write to Global Reach out, 35 Jalan Pemimpin (address) #04-01, Wedge Mount Industrial Building, Singapore 577176

Now, would you allow me to pray for you? Let’s pray together!

Dear Holy Spirit,

I pray for those who have tuned in to listen via social media.

May their eyes have been opened to see and their ears to hear the wondrous truths concerning your personality, role, and work as revealed in Scripture in the past, present, and future.

May they encounter you as their Paraclete or comforter. May they draw near to you, cultivate daily fellowship with you, and experience personal renewal.

Holy Spirit, fill them with your fullness so that out of their innermost being will flow rivers of living water touching and transforming others.

Help them to keep in step with you. In the name of Jesus, whose Name is above every other names, we pray. Amen.

God bless.
